Did you know that too much encouragement to visit with other people and other dogs create the very training problems you're trying to avoid - such as pulling on the leash, not coming when called, over-excitement around new people and other dogs, and in worst case scenarios, reactivity, and aggression?
Here at Metropawlitan Dog Training Inc., my puppy training program is designed to set you and your puppy up for success as he matures into adulthood. Let's look at a few ways I can help you accomplish this.
Your puppy can and should believe that you are the most exciting person in the world to him. And this attitude should be consistent no matter where you are or who you are with. Developing this attitude is the cornerstone for all of our training. After all, if he prefers your attention over anyone else's, loose leash walking and reliable come are a breeze to teach.
For a well-behaved puppy, manners like Sit or Down are taught on their own first. Once these skills are built-in, I teach you how to integrate these exercises into real-life skills. For example, your puppy will learn to associate sitting automatically as a part of greeting new people or lying down automatically as a part of nail trims. Done this way, I believe shyer puppies learn confidence because they believe they have some control of their environment, even when things seem super scary to them. And excitable puppies learn that the path to visit with others is to settle down and focus first.
One of the best ways to exercise your puppy is play. Just like with children, the opportunity to play is important for your puppy's mental and physical development. Play helps to develop physical coordination and fitness. Properly done, it also helps to teach your puppy to develop focus and concentration with you, learn excitability and impulse control, and improve his responsiveness in working distances away from you. It's also a great way to tire him out.
It's not all about exposure to people and dogs. Check out the other exercises we cover:
Minimize accidents and speed up your training results.
Teach your puppy to learn to love his alone time away from you.
Learn how to prepare your puppy for vet visits, grooming visits, and time at the boarding kennel or pet sitter.
"I wanted to personally reach out and say thank you. This social isolation thing has been hard on everyone and on so many businesses. Thank you for finding a way to make it work with social distancing.
I’ve worked with many trainers over the past 14 years in the veterinary community. They all had a huge variety of techniques and approaches. I wanted to let you know that I truly appreciate your method of training and find that it works well not only for me, but for my dog as well."
